South End Families Get Ready to Read! JLSN and SPEF invite the media to see learning-in-action – OR get in on the fun and read with us!
STAMFORD, CT – May 11, 2015 – The Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk (JLSN) and the Stamford Public Education Foundation (SPEF) will host their fourth Family Literacy Night of this school year for kindergarten, first and second grade students and their families from Stamford’s South End who attend Springdale Elementary School. This free program is taking place on Tuesday, May 12 from 6 – 7:30 PM at the Lathon Wider Community Center (formerly NEON), 34 Woodland Avenue, Stamford, CT.
The program is being brought to low-income children in the South End and their parents who speak English as a second language (if they speak English at all). Children will engage in literacy-based activities (such as reading with volunteers) and parents will learn ways to navigate the Stamford Public School system (such as how to read a report card, which is in English). Additionally, all families leave with new age-appropriate books in English and Spanish in order to build a home library.
Launched last year to support kindergarten and first grade students, the Family Literacy Night program has expanded this year to include 15 new kindergarteners and their families, while maintaining support of the original 60 participants as they progress through the school system.
Since fall 2013, the JLSN/SPEF Family Literacy Nights have given away close to 500 books, with an additional 200 books distributed to the community at large to support summer reading requirements.
