“We wouldn’t be able to do this if we don’t reach these students in their neighborhood. The fact that (SPEF) can help us facilitate this is wonderful. It’s like the bridge between the school and parents.” – Cruz Elena, Bi-lingual Instructor for Stamford Public Schools
SPEF hosts a series of Family Engagement Nights to educate and engage the Kindergarten and EL (English Language) parent populations at five Stamford elementary schools: Springdale, Stillmeadow, Roxbury, Westover Magnet, and KT Murphy. This program is presented in partnership with the Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk. At each Family Engagement Night, SPEF offers two knowledgeable presenters, one for each parent population, about topics crucial to engaging our district parents. ESL teachers, kindergarten teachers, and Parent Facilitators at each school help to personalize the presentations for each school to ensure that the needs of each individual community are addressed and discussed. PTO Representatives and School Governance Council Representatives are also present at each session, to help expose parents to even more ways to become involved with and informed about their school’s community. While parents participate in these workshops, children read with volunteers, receive free age-appropriate books, do craft projects – and everyone enjoys dinner together.
